MATT YANCHUK I begin my work by handbuilding or throwing the initial form on the wheel. Afterwards, I create a plaster mold of the piece so that I can recreate the form by slip-casting (filling the mold with liquid clay to produce a copy) into a low-fire white earthenware clay. After removing a vessel from the mold, I hand paint it with either a freehand design or by using a wax-resist brush method. Each shape is a challenge in finding the right combination of pattern and shape to make it work. The patterns that I incorporate into the piece are gathered from my interest in Mimbres pottery and textile design. I feel that I have combined aspects of these interests and have created something unique. Vivid colors with bold pattern which evolve with every new piece or idea that I bring to the creative process combine in an harmonious collaboration. I recommend handwashing. Also all the work is food safe and microwavable. Of course, the work is functional and decorative too. So, enjoy. Email Matt Yanchuk |
